Ornamental metalwork and historic lighting – New York, NY

In converting this turn-of-the century landmark, formerly the B. Altman & Company Department Store inManhattan, into the new City University of New York Graduate Center, Excalibur was responsible for the recreation and restoration of all the ornamental metalwork and historic lighting.

Scope: The re-building and code-compliant development of an ornate birdcage elevator; the recreation of a newel post light fixture based on a 1904 etching; the rehabilitation of the elaborate hoist way enclosure, which was then finished with a "faux-bois" application to mirror the mahogany interior of the original store; the building from both salvaged and newly designed and cast elements of the beaux-arts staircase and balconied doctoral study, as well as numerous smaller restoration details designed to bring the building back to its original brilliant appearance.
